Tag, You’re It

“Catch me if you can”

And man, she ran

After me like I was made of gold

But I did not want to let her grab hold

So we started playing a game

No rules, sunshine or rain.

Every time she would start to catch up

I would readjust my lineup

Let her think that she was getting close

Slowed down enough for her to almost reach my clothes.

Then I would sprint off once more

I flew away fast, I would soar.

The day came when she caught me

And immediately did she flee.

It took me a minute to realize I was tagged it

Finally tagged, it was hard to admit.

So I began chasing her

And back to the same old game we were.

Every time I would start to catch up

She would notice and switch her lineup

She let me think that I was getting close

She even kissed me with her nose.

Distracted by her mesmerizing grin

I did not notice she ran off into the wind –

Which blew out the flame

And before I knew it, we were playing a very different game.

Nobody told me that this game is not winnable

It is indeed miserable.

I am afraid of what will happen

The day the wind stops and relights her passion

Because I am no longer seeking where she is hiding

The chase, it was blinding

In the darkness I found the light

But what will she do when the flame reignites and gives back her sight?

The cycle is inevitable.

I have learned this lesson too many damn times, it is absolutely unquestionable.

Overplayed, no longer enjoyable

This game, it is horrible.

I withdrew, now there is only one player

No pun intended. A single betrayer.

Do not worry, she will not play alone

She will recruit others into her zone

And the cycle will begin again

But this time, I will not be it.
